Privacy Policy
Last updated: 04/03/2026
At PlasticWatch
Sri Lanka, we respect your privacy. This policy explains what data we
collect, why, and how we protect it.
1. Data we collect
- Location data – when you report a
location (burning or illegal dumping), we record the latitude and
longitude you placed on the map.
- Email address (optional) – if you choose to
provide an email to verify your report, we store a hashed (irreversible)
version of that email. The email itself is kept only temporarily (15
minutes) to send you a verification code, then deleted.
- IP address – we record your IP
address to limit the number of reports (5 per week) and prevent abuse. It
is not used for any other purpose.
- Report type – you choose “burning” or
“illegal dumping”.
2. How we use your data
- Display verified reports on the
public map.
- Allow authorities (CEA,
environmental police) to consult the reports.
- Prevent spam and fake reports
through email verification and IP limiting.
3. Data we do NOT collect
- We do not collect
any name, postal address, or phone number.
- We do not collect any
background location data (you place the point on the map yourself).
4. Data sharing
- Verified reports (GPS coordinates, type,
date) are publicly visible on the map.
- Hashed emails are not shared.
- IP addresses are not shared
unless a judicial authority makes a legal request.
- We do not sell any
data to third parties.
5. Your rights
- You can report without
providing an email (anonymous but unverified report – it will be deleted
after 30 days).
- You can request deletion of
your report (if you used an email) by contacting us via the contact form
(coming soon) or by email at privacy@plasticwatch.org (provide
the report ID and the email used).
6. Security
We use SHA‑256
hashing for emails, and HTTPS connections to protect exchanges. Data is stored
on a secure server in France.
7. Changes to this policy
Any changes
will be posted on this page with a new date. Important changes will be notified
via the website.
